But what of the New Moon, that black dot on the calendar, the Moon you usually never see? The underdog Moon just as surely stirs the mighty oceans&#8217;s tides as the Full. Usually lost unseen in the solar corona, during a total solar eclipse the 2000-mile-wide New Moon blots out the solar face nearly 900,000 miles across. That&#8217;s some female superpower amd a compelling metaphor for the power of nonviolent resistance. A total solar eclipse offers viewers the only opportunity to gaze upon the New Moon\u2019s face as it obscures the Sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many reasons Amy Martin is known by many as the Moonlady. She was born on a Full Moon.
