We are besotted by light, enthralled by the Sun’s radiance and the Full Moon’s hypnotic glow. But what of the New Moon, that black dot on the calendar, the Moon you usually never see? The underdog Moon just as surely stirs the mighty oceans’s tides as the Full. Usually lost unseen in the solar corona, during a total solar eclipse the 2000-mile-wide New Moon blots out the solar face nearly 900,000 miles across. That’s some female superpower amd a compelling metaphor for the power of nonviolent resistance. A total solar eclipse offers viewers the only opportunity to gaze upon the New Moon’s face as it obscures the Sun.
